Key rule: verify through an official route you opened yourself, not the link, number, app, or payment details supplied by the suspicious message.

Is Wish a scam, or just cheap?

Wish is a real shopping platform, not a fake website pretending to be a shop. The risk is different: you may run into misleading listings, copycat branded goods, long delivery windows, items that do not arrive, or phishing messages that impersonate Wish.

An example of the phishing style is: Wish: there is a problem with your order. Confirm your payment details here: wish-order-verify.example. Do not use a link like that to sign in or add card details. Check the order in the Wish app or by typing the Wish address yourself.

Why Wish shopping can go wrong

Wish is built around very low-cost shopping, which means expectations need to be realistic. A listing can look more polished than the product that arrives, delivery dates can be long, and a branded product at an implausibly low price is a warning sign.

The payment point is clearer. Wish's help pages list accepted payment methods and say Wish cannot accept cash on delivery, payment on delivery, or bank transfers. Wish also says card details are handled by payment service providers and that payment details can be updated through the app settings or the cart, depending on device. That is why a seller or email asking you to pay by bank transfer, or to enter card details through a separate link, should be treated as unsafe.

Signs of a Wish scam or bad buy

  • A branded item is priced far below normal retail price.
  • The listing uses only stock photos, vague descriptions, or weak review history.
  • A seller asks you to pay outside Wish's normal checkout.
  • A message or email asks for your password, card details, or bank information through a link.
  • The link is a lookalike domain, shortened URL, or unrelated website.
  • You are pressured to buy immediately before a deal ends.
  • Spelling mistakes can be clues, but a polished listing or email can still be unsafe.

With a bad listing, the buyer is pulled in by a very low price. The item may then arrive late, arrive looking different from the photos, or not arrive at all. If that happens, use the Wish order and refund process rather than arguing with a seller outside the platform.

With phishing, the message pretends to be about a Wish order, refund, or payment problem. The link leads to a copycat page that asks for your login, card details, or personal information. Anything entered there can be used for fraud. Checking orders inside the app or on the genuine website breaks that chain.

How to buy more safely on Wish

Keep the purchase and payment inside Wish.

  • Pay only through Wish's normal checkout. Wish says it does not accept bank transfers.
  • Treat an impossible branded bargain as a serious red flag.
  • Read reviews, product details, photos, and seller information before buying.
  • Check an order's real status in the app or on Wish directly, not through an email link.
  • Manage payment details only through Wish settings, the cart, or the official app/site.
  • Use a card or PayPal where available, so you have a payment provider to contact if the platform process fails.

If you paid or shared details

If an item has not arrived, or it arrived damaged, defective, incorrect, or not as expected, start with Wish Assistant or the order help route. Wish's refund policy says refund requests generally need to be made within 30 days of delivery, and its money-back wording says you can contact Wish if an item does not arrive by the Refund Eligible Date shown in Order History.

If Wish's process does not resolve it and you paid by card or PayPal, ask your payment provider what dispute or chargeback options are available. If you entered card or bank details on a fake Wish page, contact your bank using the number on your card and ask them to secure the card or account.

If you sent money by UK bank transfer on or after 7 October 2024, APP fraud reimbursement rules may apply to eligible Faster Payments and CHAPS transfers. The PSR rules include a 13-month claim window, a maximum claim amount of £85,000, possible exclusions, and a possible excess of up to £100. Report the payment to your bank as fraud as soon as possible.

If you shared personal details, consider Cifas Protective Registration at cifas.org.uk and monitor your credit reports with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Keep the listing, order number, messages, emails, payment receipts, and any website address you used.

How to report a Wish scam (UK)

Report a problem order through Wish Assistant or the relevant order help route. If the problem is a phishing email pretending to be Wish, forward it to the NCSC at report@phishing.gov.uk. If it came by text, forward it to 7726.

If you lost money, shared sensitive information, or were hacked, report it to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk or on 0300 123 2040 if you are in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. In Scotland, report to Police Scotland on 101.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wish a legitimate company or a scam?

Wish is a real shopping platform. The risk is not that the whole site is fake; it is that low-cost marketplace shopping can involve poor-quality goods, misleading listings, non-delivery, or phishing messages that impersonate the brand.

Why is Wish so cheap?

Wish focuses on low-cost products and promotions, so prices can be much lower than traditional retail. A very cheap price is not proof of a scam, but a branded item at a tiny fraction of its normal price should be treated as high risk.

My Wish order never arrived - can I get a refund?

Possibly. Check the order in Wish and use Wish Assistant. Wish says deliveries are protected by its Money Back Guarantee if the item does not arrive by the Refund Eligible Date shown in Order History, but you need to request help within the stated time limits.

I got a Wish email asking for my card details - is it genuine?

Treat it as phishing. Do not click the link or enter details. Wish says payment details are managed through settings or the cart, and sensitive card data is handled by payment service providers. Check your order in the app or by typing the address yourself.

How do I report a Wish scam?

Report order problems through Wish Assistant. Forward phishing emails to report@phishing.gov.uk, and forward scam texts to 7726. If you lost money, report it to Report Fraud in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, or to Police Scotland on 101 in Scotland.
