Vinted Scams UK: Warning Signs for Buyers and Sellers
Vinted is a genuine platform, but scammers are active there — here's exactly how to spot them before you lose money or items.
The risk on both sides: being pushed off Vinted
Vinted is a genuine, widely-used peer-to-peer marketplace, and most trades go through without issue. Many scam patterns on the platform share one root cause: someone — buyer or seller — is persuaded to pay, communicate, or arrange delivery outside the app. Vinted says it holds the buyer's money securely during a transaction and releases it to the seller only after the buyer receives the order and confirms everything is OK. That protection only applies to payments made through Vinted itself.
Common scam patterns to watch for
As a buyer, watch for: items that are significantly not as described or counterfeit, listings with photos copied from elsewhere, and sellers who ask you to pay by bank transfer "to avoid fees" instead of using Buy Now. As a seller, watch for a buyer claiming to have paid and sending a fake "payment confirmation" message or screenshot, or asking to "confirm your card details" to receive payment — a real Vinted payment never requires you to enter card details to receive it.
In both directions, a message that moves the conversation off Vinted — to WhatsApp, text, or email — before a deal is agreed is a warning sign in itself.
Signs of a Vinted scam
- You're asked to pay or be paid outside the app, by direct bank transfer.
- A buyer sends a "proof of payment" screenshot instead of the payment actually showing in your Vinted balance.
- You're asked to click a link or "confirm your card" to receive a payment as a seller.
- Photos in a listing look copied from a retailer's site or another listing.
- The price is unusually low for a genuine, popular item.
- You're pushed to move the conversation to WhatsApp, text, or email before agreeing a deal.
How to stay safe on Vinted
Keep every part of the transaction — messaging, payment, and any dispute — inside the app.
- Always pay through Vinted's own checkout, never by direct bank transfer.
- As a seller, you never need to enter card details, click a link, or "confirm" anything to receive a Buy Now payment — it appears in your Vinted balance automatically.
- Check a seller's reviews and how long they've been active before buying, and check a buyer's reviews before agreeing an offer.
- You have 2 days from delivery to report a problem with an order, so check items promptly and report through the app rather than waiting.
If you've already paid outside the app or been scammed
If you paid by bank transfer outside Vinted, contact your bank immediately — acting quickly gives the best chance of stopping or recalling the payment. If you sent money by UK bank transfer on or after 7 October 2024, mandatory APP fraud reimbursement rules may apply to Faster Payments and CHAPS transfers, subject to a 13-month claim window, a maximum claim of £85,000, and a possible excess of up to £100.
If you paid through Vinted itself and the item didn't arrive or wasn't as described, report it within the app as soon as possible — this is what Buyer Protection is there to cover.
How to report a Vinted scam (UK)
Report the listing, message, or user directly within the Vinted app — this is the fastest way to have a scam listing or account investigated and removed.
If you lost money or shared sensitive information, also report it to Report Fraud at reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040 if you are in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland. In Scotland, report to Police Scotland on 101. If you were targeted by the specific "fake payment confirmation" con as a seller, see our dedicated guide on Vinted buyer scams for that variant.
Frequently asked questions
Is Vinted safe to use?
Yes, when you keep the whole transaction inside the app. Vinted holds payment during the transaction and releases it to the seller after the buyer confirms the order is OK — that protection is lost the moment payment moves outside the app.
A buyer sent me a screenshot showing they've paid — is that proof?
No. A genuine Vinted payment shows up in your Vinted balance, not as a screenshot sent by the buyer. Never post an item, or click a link to "confirm" your card, based on a payment screenshot alone.
Do I need to give my card details to receive a Vinted payment?
No. As a seller, a Buy Now payment appears automatically in your Vinted balance — you never need to click a link or enter card details to receive it. Treat any request to do so as a scam.
How to avoid being scammed on Vinted?
Keep messaging, payment, and any dispute inside the app. Never pay or accept payment by direct bank transfer, and be wary of any request to move the conversation to WhatsApp or text before a deal is agreed.
